Remembering Koko – Our Week of Memories

Hey It’s Jet Here.

A year ago today, Koko, our golden girl crossed OTRB.  She was the inspiration for my blog because both Mom and I needed a pick-me-up.  We did not begin posting until Halloween, as we were mired (vocab building project VBP) in sadness for quite some time.  Join us this week for our tribute to Koko, Mom’s first ever K9 and my first ever K9 sister (I think!).

Mom spent lots of time in her teen years finding ways to visit her Aunt and Uncle, when, really… she wanted to snuggle, pet and play with their gorgeous, sweet golden, Brandywine.  Her Aunt took her to the famous golden breeder in Princeton, NJ every now and then.  Mom wanted to hide and never leave the gaggle of goldens!  (Her hair color kind of matched!)  Her Aunt took her to the Westminster the year Brandy’s mate won his group.  As she got older and her cousins went off to college, she began dogsitting when her Aunt and Uncle traveled.  She was hooked on Goldens for life!

When Mom learned about rescue in college, she vowed that when the time was right to share her life with a K9, she would rescue.  Somehow, she had to reconcile that decision with her unbending desire to share her life with a golden retriever.

About 10 years ago now, she was in NYC with Mr. Fred and Rachel and met a golden on the street.  Of course she had to chat with the owner and pet the pup!  She learned that breed rescues existed.  Well, that took care of that.  Mom and Mr. Fred adopted Koko in February 2004 from Golden Rescue South Florida.  Here’s the story as told to Dog Fancy in August 2004.

    • Hey it’s Jet here.

Oh she was, sweet and noble were the descriptions most used to describe her. She and Mom bonded heart-to-heart. I kept Koko feeling spry (vbp) and chipper during the second half of her years with Mom! 🙂

  1. hi sweet Jetty – thank you for sharing this wonderful story of your beloved Koko – I enjoyed learning how Mom fell in love with this breed and really loved the pic of Rachel and Koko, she sure was pretty. She was truly a heart dog and and angel in a fur suit. Sending hugs to you, Mom and Rachel xoxoxo

    • Hey it’s Jet here. Hi Miss Wendy.

How do you do it? Your description is so perfect Mom asked if she can use it. “She was truly a heart dog and and angel in a fur suit.”

Have a great day at work… sending lots of Jetty kisses and JJ hugs to you, Mr. David, Jacob, Cassie, Rex and Barkley xoxoxox

    • Hey Amber, Jet here.

Thank you so kindly for adding sweet Fluffy to your Rainbow friends. We visited and commented yesterday.

You are quite right, Koko left an indelible (vbp) paw print on all the hearts she encountered. 🙂

  2. Hi Y’all!

    That was a beautiful story.

Just wanted to hop on by and see how y’all are doin’. Hope y’all have a wonderful and safe weekend!

    Y’all come by now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

  3. Oh how COOL! And they did an article about Koko’s adoption!! What a wonderful story. And we totally completely understand the “mired in grief” part. We’re called Ryker’s Boyz because Ryekr was mommy’s heart love and it was HIS blog first. When we lost him so suddenly…mowzers, it seemed to take FOREVER to recover. Soft paw pats to you on this day of remembrance….

    • Hey FaRaDaY, Hey Maxwell, Hey Allie, Jetty here.

Mom thought it was super cool, too! She thought at first the author was asking if she wanted to purchase a subscription to the magazine!!!

Oh gosh, thanks so much for the soft paw pats, I’m sorry you all understand on a personal basis. We’re so sorry to learn of Ryker’s sudden crossing OTRB. How proud he must be for your care and continuation of his blog.

Sending Jetty kisses and JJ hugs in understanding and empathy (vbp) xoxoxo

  4. Oh Jetty, what a sweet story, your sister sounds like a lovely pup, I did not know that mom was partial to Goldens. Does she follow Miss Kim at LIfe at Golden Pines? Miss Kim used to run the golden rescue and she takes a lot of seniors in. 🙂

    • Hey Sampson, Hey Delilah, Jet here. Hi Miss Jodi.

Gosh Miss Jodi, She does not, will have to check out the blog! 🙂 After goldens, Mom’s partial to retrievers, she met her first flat coat about 7-8 years ago and thought how pawesome it would be to share her forever home with one of each… that’s how I ended up with Mom! Except… um… Miss Jodi… when Mom went to adopt me, she realized right away, I was not so much a flat coat. She loved me just the same and off I went to join the family. Now we think I’m flat coat mixed with border collie, making me a follie!!! We decided that I’m pawesome because I have the best of both heritages!

  5. What a great story about Koko! You have such great memories to share. We know how hard it is to loose a furry friend. We are still grieving over the loss of Shiloh. Mom still sheds tears and we miss her so much so we understand why you grieved for so long.

Thinking about your family and sending many hugs and kisses!

    • Hey Scout, Hey Teddy, Hey Ash, Jet here.

We carry her memories in our heart pockets every day. She was a real peach!

We empathize about Shiloh… at some point, the sadness transitions to memories that feel sweet and a little far away. Takes a while, though…

Sending we understand Jetty kisses and JJ hugs. xoxoxox

    • Hey Sassy, Jet here.

So nice to make your acquaintance, especially during our Koko Memory week. Sorry for the late reply, we’ve had tons of storms this week and JJ and I do not permit Mom to work on the computer much as we need LOTS of extra attention. Between that and her multiple jobs, she gets backed up in the transcription department!
