Follow Up Friday – Dear Blogville Edition

Hey It’s Jet Here.

follow-up-fridayOur friend, Miss Jodi, Heart Like a Dog, initiated this great idea to update readers on previous posts.  She created a lovely badge to go with her idea and has successfully turned her wonderful idea into a robust blog hop!

Saturday – Dear Blogville

dog chasing catWe appreciated the amount of time and care so many blogpals took to think about the difficult situation we faced last week.  Ruby let go of JJ, who saw and then zoomed after a feral cat while the homeowner had a very strong reaction.  Most of you had perspectives that resonated with Mom’s.  We have passed that way four times this week without incident.  No Mr. Homeowner sighting, though.

Sunday – Neve Makes Tracks

neve in packed car bwOur pack mate, Neve (we forgot to clarify she is a female!), stayed comfy cozy as Mr. Giovanni and Miss Beverly crossed either 8 states in 12 days or 12 states in 8 days, we forget!  Miss Beverly generously sent in this photo, which we thought had a cool composition.  Whoops, we still owe a bunch of comments from this day (Mom travels and spends very little time home on Sundays lately.)

Monday – Just Thinking About Mischief Potential

rachels rm door openA sliver of open door to a teenage room can really get your nose twitching!  Many of you wanted to know if Little Miss Curiosity and I went into Rachel’s room.  I, Gentleman Jetty, refrained from invading my human sister’s privacy.  Little Miss Can’t Resist did a fast investigation locating and delivering a wrapper of some sort to Mom.  Mom realized the source of the wrapper and quickly put a kibosh on further snooping.

Tuesday – Mom and JJ Finished the Book

SONY DSCGuess what? A few humans said they also read The Sharper the Knife, The Less You Cry.  Mom selected one of the recipes from author, Kathleen Flinn’s website.  She chose the Salad Nicoise because Little Miss Bon Appetit and I like almost every ingredient you see in the picture.  Lots of readers enjoyed the recipe, too!  Yippee!  Coincidentally, Mom’s Kitchen Counselor Newsletter eblasted Tuesday to some of our blogpals; Mom had a special thank you to them in this edition!

Wednesday – OCEARCH – Making Shark Tracks

amy sharkI would say the opinions were unanimous – great photos, great project, glad we live on land and do not encounter these 3,500 lb. creatures!  Several of you acknowledged and agreed the program creates a win/win for humans and sharks, whose populations have greatly declined.

Thursday – Mom Requests a Post of Her Own

blogpaws_conf_300x250Boy of boy, thank you for your kind words of understanding, empathy (VBP) and support for Mom.  I love you guys for that!  She worked on about 40 comments yesterday and hopefully will have some dig out time tomorrow, after her BlogTalk Radio show segment, too!  She promised to represent the Tropics as well as help me report when she attends BlogPaws.  What a leap of financial faith I tell ya!  She’s doing some of that nervous finger tapping stuff; however, I know she will figure it out.  (Coincidentally, she procured (VBP) a small, new, exciting part time job yesterday!)

Another great hats off to Blogville, week.

Dear Blogville

Hey It’s Jet Here.

We need some guidance today regarding a situation that occurred earlier in the week.  Here’s the scenario:

6We went out for our evening constitutional hoping to finish before the fireworks began.  Mom disconnected Little Miss Adjustable Leash’s six foot option to a four foot option so Ruby could walk JJ.  Ruby had joined us a few days in a row and did a great job with Little Miss Happy Happy.  Ruby even scoops my poop in addition to JJ’s!

Little background… of late, when Ruby feels like she cannot control JJ, she hands the leash over to Mom speedy quick or sits down.  Every now and then, she lets go, however, she knows that’s not a safe idea and tries hard not to.

lightstickOk, back to the walk… Mom wore her usual flashlight and off we went, exit left.  We’ve taken Ruby this way often and due to the holiday, the streets had less traffic than usual.  We crossed the canal, made a left, then the first right.  (We live in suburbia.)

More background… on the next corner lives a middle aged man who keeps lots of feral cats.  He spends many nights outside sitting, drinking and chatting with his friends.  Mom, Miss Mary Ann, Miss Beverly and the pack have passed them many a time, say hi and chat.  The gentleman has even refilled Rachel’s flat bicycle tires!  Little Miss Cat Chaser and I do bark when the ferals run across the lawns and at times pull Mom really hard.  Sometimes, Mom turns onto that street and sometimes she continues another block.

dog chasing catOk, back to the walk.  As we approached that corner house, JJ spotted a cat before me and Mom and Ruby screamed and let go of the leash.  JJ zoomed after that feline and the men started shouting.   I got quite excited and Mom couldn’t snatch JJ because she was trying to manage me.  The feline was zooming around which intuitively created the urge to chase.  One of the men grabbed JJ and brought her to Mom and me.

The Homeowner started yelling in a threatening manner that Mom’s dog better not EVER do that again and cursed a bit.  Mom tried to yell over an apology and that Ruby got scared and let go.  Ruby felt horrible and worried she did something naughty.  The Homeowner kept yelling.  The feline was unhurt and never touched. (Oh, this Homeowner has a fully fenced in yard, which is NOT where this feline was.)

sad faceMom was concerned that Ruby thought that everything was her fault, so, quickly, while tightly holding both JJ and I, kept walking towards home.  Mom felt angry that the man spoke meanly to Ruby, cursed in front of Ruby and seemed to forget he and Mom knew each other.  Mom wanted to step away for a bit and decide how to handle the next meeting with the Homeowner.

Mom’s info and thoughts:

  • We’ve lived with cats, however, outside running cats feel different.
  • The neighbors have repeatedly asked this Homeowner to trap and neuter if he intended to keep the quickly growing colony. Refused to the best of our knowledge and several of the felines have been run over.
  • This feline was outside the gated yard; if inside, Mom would accept total responsibility.
  • Mom could have asked for JJ’s leash in this area, although Ruby had walked with JJ in this area many times before without incident.
  • Mom was bothered most by the Man’s harsh reaction to Ruby.
  • When a loose feline runs free, many dogs will instinctively chase and that should be understood by Homeowner.
  • Mom didn’t see the cat due to darkness and therefore didn’t prepare for or anticipate the situation.

Thoughts?

Another sensitive experience day.

Follow Up Friday – Diamond Dog Edition

Hey It’s Jet Here.

30_30-badge2A1Before I begin, I want to share an exciting program we joined.  Chester, Gretel and Miss Jess from YDWWYW initiated a 30/30 Challenge (walk 30 minutes a day for 30 days) beginning New Year’s Day.  We’re kind of a shoe/paw in because we do that every day since we do not have a fenced in yard.  We liked the positive outlook and will try to walk more when we can.  This project ties in to some of the points we made on our Saturday post.

follow-up-fridayOur friend, Miss Jodi, Heart Like a Dog, initiated this great idea to update readers on previous posts.  She created a lovely badge to go with her idea and has successfully turned her wonderful idea into a robust blog hop!

Saturday – Diamond Dogs

girls-best-friendGosh, so many of our pals resonated with the picture Mom received.  You thanked us for sharing the questions Mom receives often about sharing her life with two big (really? Little Miss Golden Tropic 2013 and I think we’re fairly midsized!) K9s and echoed her sentiments.  Blogville Rocks!

Sunday – An Unexpected Visit with Austin

4 bwAs the transcriptionist, Mom did not clarify that only MOM visited with Austin!  Many of you find Austin as manly man handsome and sweet as Mom does.  Remember, he was one of the Bachelors in Little Miss Dating Game’s collection!

Monday – Literary Mischief Part II

6Remember how we worried Miss Beverly would find out about Little Miss Book Club’s enjoyment of this month’s selection?  Well, Miss Beverly read the post, commented and proved why we love her so much!  “I, Miss Beverly, say that this looks like a very well-loved book… which makes me very happy!”  Nellie’s comment gave us a good chuckle, “Hmmm, That can’t happen here anymore at our house – Mommy gots an ereader. Now all she has to contend with is slobber…”

Tuesday – Wonderful Water

water w lemon limeOur first Tasty Tuesday post of the New Year hailed the virtues of water.  All our furpals gave paws up to their enjoyment of agua.  Most of the bipeds agreed; some preferring tea to the cold options to drink the recommended daily amounts.

Wednesday – Dancing in the New Year

1Thanks for your resounding compliments and enjoyment of Ruby and Little Miss Dancing with the Stars’ photo.  Some of our newer readers thought JJ was me!  Some of our long term readers worried that I didn’t get a turn.  Mom and I loved the moment; I did not feel left out or limited because of the Cone of Courage.  I’m mellower these days… maybe it’s the hypothyroid medicine, maybe it’s the two weeks of fireworks… who knows.

Thursday – Comic Book-ized Jetty Boy

kirby comic style thanksWe apologize for falling behind on comments again. You cannot see the great responses yet ranging from agreeing that Little Miss Marvel and I are superheroes to thanking us for introducing you to the talented creators, Kirby and his Mom!  Mr. Will asked how we did it… Lucky for us, Kirby and his Mom shared the tool because you know who is quite tech challenged!

Another great Diamond Dogs FUF day!

PS… Mom’s tummy ouchies have returned on top of her lingering cold/flu thingie… we have to dig out again… which… is taking us a bit longer because my Nana and Poppi have some major health issues going on and Mom is doing lots of attending… (They live 2 hours north!)  Thanks for bearing with Mom, she really appreciates it.  Jetty

Diamond Dogs

Hey It’s Jet Here.

One of the ladies in Mom’s biscuit earning office suite gave her this picture last week.

girls-best-friend

Mom found the saying so true; she placed it on top of her printer to see it clearly throughout her workday.  When she told Miss Mary Ann at the corner after our evening constitutional, Miss Mary Ann nodded her head and said she had seen that quote before.

girls best friend

I think I may have shared before that Mom waited over 30 years to share her life with a K9.  I’ve heard people ask Mom the following questions:

Don’t they shed?

sheddingMomYes, I totally don’t care; I’ve waited all my life to live with dogs.  We have tumbleweeds of different colors; my clothes remind me of their place in my life.  Fur adds protein to my dishes! That’s why they invented vacuums, lint rollers, sponges, paper towels, etc…

Don’t you mind getting up so early?

MomNo, I’m a morning person and I’ve adjusted to Jetty’s schedule by doing work earlier and then squeezing in a nap!

What about walking them in bad weather?

rainy day 6-23-12 006MomI will say that’s not my favorite occurrence, however, knowing you have to walk several times each day gets you up an out, reminds you to appreciate your surroundings, allows you to practice mindfulness, bonds you with your K9s, and makes you laugh… because what else can you do when you all look like soggy messes!  (I do wish I had a fenced yard with a doggie door!!!)

Do you resent having to interrupt your plans to take them out?

Mom: If I had a bigger family, this issue would be easier; however, I accept my promise and plan accordingly.

Don’t you find two big, hairy dogs too much?

9Mom: No, I’ve always been drawn to big, fluffy dogs.  I find petting their soft fur relaxing and calming.  I brush them most nights (JJ takes 5 minutes, Jetty about 20!)  Watching their bodies decompress (VBP) and their eyes close, trusting me to take care of them means a great deal.  When we walk, they make me laugh as they interact with the outside world.  I revel (VBP) in their enjoyment of the moment.  Also, it keeps my upper body strength strong!

Don’t they cost a lot?

Mom: Yes!  Have you heard a house referred to as a money pit?  And yet, the same homeowners will stand by their house like the Captain of the Titanic?  Same goes for furfamily members!

girls best friend 3

Ann’s Infographic the other day is a stark reminder of what you have in store when deciding to share your life with K9s (felines, too.)  For me, it’s a small price to pay for the invaluable experience of living with K9s.  I probably spend more on their food, treats, vet visits, accessories etc… than on myself at this point, due to changes in my financial condition.   I simply don’t care because the joy and mental wellness they bring to my life is… PRICELESS.

Another great “way to go” Mom day!

Follow Up Friday – Cone of Courage Edition

Hey It’s Jet Here.

follow-up-fridayOur friend, Miss Jodi, Heart Like a Dog, initiated this great idea to update readers on previous posts.  She created a lovely badge to go with her idea and has successfully turned her wonderful idea into a robust blog hop!

Before I begin, may I write a BIG THANK YOU for checking on Mom and I to see how we’re feeling.  I’m kerplopping less out on our walks; however, I’m still rather uncomfortable.  Mom says I tolerate the first aid spray and the goopy medicine very well.  The Cone of Courage remains on 24/7 to defray (VBP) my desire to bite/scratch the area.  Mom seems to have improved about 20%; she continues to feel like her head is under water!  She kept her promise and rested a good bit last week.

Saturday – Merry Newfmas and Happy Houndlidays

ernieWe enjoyed participating in The Pet Blogger Gift Exchange hosted by the fetching Honey and Miss Pamela.  Many of you already knew our giftee, Newf and Hound, while several of you looked forward to meeting them.  Guess what?  Turns out my buddy, Snoopy, lives really close to Hazel, Ernie, Nooner and Foyle and wants to meet them!  Super cool!

Sunday – Cone of Courage

cone of courage 1We appreciated your feedback which ranged from acknowledging our efforts to “turn our frown, upside down” to making lemonade from lemons, etc… Mom asked me to share she’s glad you found the photo moving.  So many of you have my back on this one, I feel the love!

Monday – Scientific Mischief

human tangled in dog leashYeah, you could relate to Little Miss Bird Dog and my urges to uh… stray from the strict scientific endeavor of participating in this year’s annual Bird Count.  Glad you got a kick out of our Boa Leash maneuver!  Of course you understood our efforts to keep that arrogant Winchester in line!  My BFF, Savannah, requested a quill from that peacock, which, we will happily try to find when he next molts!

Tuesday – Tasty Tuesday Christmas Style

christmasWe wished our blogpal community celebrating Christmas the appropriate greetings and asked how to properly do so in a few cultures.  We learned that in a few countries, it’s proper to say Happy Christmas, as Merry Christmas might imply (VBP) debauchery!  We even learned how to send good wishes in Dutch from Suki, Hiro and Miss DiandaVrolijk Kerstfeest!

Wednesday – Now I’m a Leaping Lord

Wowee, wow wow!  Can you believe Miss Ann bestowed such a Royal title on ‘ol Jetty boy?  Thanks for the positive feedback on my new skills.  I think that I may be ready to learn the game of kings… POLO!  Several pals worried about my ego… I want to quash (VBP) the notion that I will change as a result of my recent Royal titles… I remain your humble Jetty.  If I begin to show any difference, Mom PROMISES to keep me in line!

Thursday – The Little Thingies

shameless conesSo glad you feel the same way about gratitude for the “basics” (which are really a big deal, especially for those of us who had “before” times we do not want to think about.)  We all agree to take time each day to remind ourselves of how fortunate we are.  I’ll remind you, if you remind me!

As for my digression regarding the recent appointment of a new Secretary of State, our friends at the DogDaz Zoo wrote, “And you are so right about a Golden for Sec of State.”  I really feel Bo’s Dad made a mistake – there, I said it again!

bo and Mr. O

Another great Follow Up Friday holiday edition.

Merry Newfmas and Happy Houndlidays!

Hey It’s Jet Here.

Pet-Blogger-Gift-Exchange1When we read about Honey’s Pet Blogger’s Gift Exchange, we just knew we had to participate.  We emailed the fetching Honey and Miss Pamela and then… we found out our secret match, our pals at Newf and Hound!

Here are the rules:

  1. Share encouragement and compliments – Easy Peasy!
  2. Link up here – No problem!
  3. Share on any and all social media – Hmpf… as you know, Mom limits me to blog only!

When we first met long haired dachshunds, Ernie, Hazel and Nooner, we got a kick out of the fact that they shared their forever home with Foyle the Newfoundland!  You can read how that all came about here.  You know how Mom feels about fluffy fur, so, we were hooked right away.  Furthermore, they live in Mom’s favorite area of the U.S., San Francisco.

ernie

We love the diversity of subject matter, ranging from:

  • Their hiking adventures – you have to see the three petite Doxies keeping up with Foyle!
  • dachshund dressBucket Babe – Fashion.  Little Miss Fashion Plate ogled (VBP – Vocab Builder Project) the dachshund dress and thought a fall, auburn colored golden retriever pattern would look lovely, too!
  • DJ Track and Hound – they share playlists for different activities.
  • Foyle Fridays.
  • Nooner News.
  • 2012-12-17 Photo Transfer_5Crafts – This week’s project showed how to put the crew on wooden coasters with Mod Podge!
  • Training and Techniques – Check out the post where Foyle chases a coconut!
  • Treats and Food – we both posted reviews of chicken jerky on the same day! Great minds…
  • Letterpress posts show you how to make or where to purchase a variety of pressed prints or die cut items.
  • 6a0105358f3c48970b0134862ca249970c-500wiLandscape Design posts might discuss sustainable outdoor doghouses, planting a front yard garden or a water trough garden.  This topic appeals to our Kitchen K9 side as does the Treats and Food category!
  • One of our favorite categories carries the name – Make This Buy That.  No judgement, simply two options with links to resources.  We especially enjoyed the Raised Dog Feeder  and the Raised Dog Bed.  Mom would like to know if a handy manly-man arrives with the instructions!

We have to find out whether the NewfandHound’s human is affiliated with Etsy or simply enjoys viewing Etsy sites, because we read lots of Etsy references!  NewfandHound has a modern, clean format which we appreciate.  The tone of the writing stays modern too. (Their tag line is “We are 4 modern dogs living in a modern world! Join us on our adventures!” after all!) We would add the adjectives informative, creative, interesting, playful, and positive with gorgeous photos to boot!

Visit NewfandHound to see what Ernie, Hazel, Nooner and Foyle are up to.  Wish them a Merry Newfmas and Happy Houndlidays and let them know that Jetty sent ya!

Another great NewfandHound day!

Follow Up Friday – Gotcha Day Stretch Edition

Hey It’s Jet Here.

sad dogBefore I begin, if you read some of my comments from yesterday, you know I had an unexpected visit with Dr. Schaffer.  Little Miss Annual Exam had a scheduled meeting; however, after a late night version of “Ants in the Pants,” Mom put me in the car, too.  The “AITP” game looks like me zipping across the couch, in and out of my day bed, plopping on the tile, doing the tushy slide on the cool tiles, never finding a comfy position over and over.  When Mom saw me go for the underside of my fluffy tail, she cringed and knew “it” was back.

I’ll give you the quick and yucky version:

  • Pyoderma – can spread really fast, mine was about three inches and superficial.  Dr. Schaffer said Mom did a good thing bringing me in crying dogfast.
  • Got a shave which made me squeal so loud, Mom’s heart broke. (I accidentally scratched Mr. Vet Tech really bad… I apologized.)
  • Got a shot, got a spray which burned, got ointment; Cone of Shame went from car to office to my neck.
  • Whimpered for 45 minutes while Little Miss Annual Exam got her stuff done; Mom sat on floor trying to console me.
  • Sent home with two ice packs for under my tail… no can do!
  • Passed out on my our couch and in my daybed for the remainder of day.
  • Dr. Schaffer said the hardest part is the first 18 hours, so, should start improving today with medicine.

Sunday – Grammy Unexpectedly Hops By

Everyone loved our unexpected visiting Bunny rabbit.  His coloring and method of movement fit right in with the Black and White Blog Hop.

Monday – Chopped Liver Mischief

Thanks for understanding why JJ and I felt left out of the fun when Ruby brought Grammy over to visit Mom and Rachel.  We got a little sniff at the end and Little Miss Curiosity even had a brief close encounter with the little hopper.  Yes, I know he’s adorable… I would have been a perfect gentleman.

Tuesday – JJ’s Favorite Fruit

In honor of her “Gotcha Day Stretch Celebration”, we featured apples two ways: in Wassail a pre-colonial holiday beverage and in an Artisan Bread Stuffing perfect for the holidays as well.  Lots of pals and their humans never heard of Wassail before and thought they might like to try it.  Send us some photos if you do!

1

Of course, we prefer our apples straight up as Mom’s Kitchen K9s.  Many of you like the same apple varieties as Casa Jet!

Wednesday – Little Miss…

JJ enjoyed thanking you for the many compliments and loving nicknames you sent in regarding her photos.  She told me I have great friends, to which I heartily agreed!  Here’s JJ with Miss Wendy again!

Thursday – The Next Big Thing

the-next-big-thingKirby warmed the cockles of our hearts (hey Mom, what kind of term is that?  Jetty, it’s an old expression) with his description of our blog when he bestowed The Next Big Thing Award on us.  We passed on the award to five bloggers who more recently joined the blogosphere and have made a strong impact on us.

Thank you all for checking up on Mom.  She still stuffy, figured out the problem involves her sinuses and should get to an MD sooner than later.

Another great Gotcha Day Stretch week, day.

top of leash 2You won’t believe what EZYDog did for Little Miss What Happened to My New Leash.  Because of a series of rather serious stuff landing atop Mom’s never ending “To-Do” list over the last year, she never took proactive steps to let Ms. EZYDog know that Little Miss Welcome to Casa Jet’s swanky pink camo Mutley leash shredded in two places within the first two to three weeks of usage.

where the 2 foot section connects with the 4 foot sectionFINALLY, Mom got it together and decided to deal with it over the Thanksgiving long weekend.  She wanted to call Ms. EZYDog, however, that option was not available.  Mom hmpfed a little.  She wrote the required email (she politely made her points) and poof… almost instantly she received a response from Mr. Brady.

Mr. Brady asked for some data and photos.  Mom took them speedy quick and sent them.  She showed Mr. Brady the difference from her interpretation of normal wear and tear and the original unraveling/shredding.  She wrote that she LOVED the handle, the color, the concept (Mom bought the extension) and explained a few reasons for her inappropriate delay in communication.

Mr. Brady acknowledged Mom’s photos and said he would replace the leash.  Immediately, Mom began bragging to everyone she encountered how well EZYDog handled our situation.  Mom told Mr. Brady she would accept the credit under the following conditions:

  • Mom and Mr. Brady would decide what would be the right items for JJ…
  • Mom would pay the difference if there was any…
  • Mom would write (well actually I would dictate, she would transcribe) a review for my blog…
  • Mom would write a review on the EZYDog site. (She told Mr. Brady she may need technical guidance.)

5Mom shared with Mr. Brady, that one of our blogpals had written a post on the harness with chest plate and would he recommend that for Little Miss I Learned to Pull from My Brother.  He guided Mom through her options and told Mom how to measure Little Miss Svelte (VBP – vocab builder project) for her harness.  Mom said it might take her a few days to get that done.  Mr. Brady said he input a credit for Mom and set up and ID and password.

Mom ordered Monday and the package arrived Thursday.  Mom unwrapped it today when she returned from the biscuit earning place and Little Miss Flaunt Her Pink Camo wore most of it tonight.  (more on that later…)

Did You Hear the One About…

Hey It’s Jet Here.

So, Mom and I, (ok, Little Miss Happy, Happy, too), jumped up and down when we learned that Miss Annette and Snoopy published their Pawesome book on that Amazon place.

mischief master classWe did a longer happy dance when we realized Snoopy and his Mum generously gave Mom an editing credit.

Mischief Master Class [Kindle Edition] Annette Vivian (Author), Lori Moldovan (Editor)

Of course, if I, Mischief Minded Jetty, did not:

  1. Perform dashing fetes (VBP – vocab builder project) of Mischief,
  2. Expertly dictate same to Mom,
  3. Remind her to rapidly submit THREE posts to choose from (yes, because I’m THAT good!) when Snoopy requested, (Mom couldn’t pick the best… she’s too close to the talent!)

jet with berry branchWe might have missed our selection by Snoops for Rule 2 – Hide The Evidence.  Can you believe Snoops and Miss Annette included us in the book’s preview video, whoo hoo!

Oops, I digressed, got a little carried away with my new found 15 seconds of fame…

You see on Thursday morning, when I lovingly woke Mom at 4:30 a.m. to get a head start on her day, she came upon an email from a friend in Cayman.

Mr. Adam, “A friend of mine recommended this on Facebook and the name of the editor caught my eye.”   Mom nearly fell out of her chair.  How did Mr. Adam find Snoopy’s book one day after Miss Annette published it?

six degrees of separation 2She emailed Miss Annette, who was soundly sleeping three time zones away.  Later in the day, after the ladies corresponded for a while, it turns out that a friend of Miss Annette’s relative knows Mr. Adam.  Mom says it’s like this thingie called 6 degrees of separation…

IMG_1302Mom has five friends downloading the book so far, we hope you will to.  Half of the profits go to help Therapy Dogs.  Mom has a fondness for therapy dogs as many of you know because she and my golden sister, Koko, volunteered at our local children’s hospital for 4.5 years.

Another great literary day!

P.S.  Big Happy Birthday Wishes to my Human Sister, Rachel! Xoxoxoxoxo

P.P.S.  If anyone would like my pawtograph, let me know… I promise to remain grounded Jetty, no celebrity tantrums here, uh uh, no paparazzi at Casa Jetty, no diva food requests, no drama …….

Mom Took the Pledge

Hey It’s Jet Here.

Mom participated in only ONE Black Friday experience yesterday.  She visited Pet Supermarket @ 8:45 a.m. to take advantage of their special on cat litter.  There you have it.  She took care of some other errands on her way home and then worked on the computer all day.

Mom read so many emails today (over 400) that she forgot to save the site the following list came from.  (And you wondered why she didn’t transcribe my responses to your generous comments over the last few days!)

One of the emails asked humans to take the pledge to celebrate the holiday season a little differently offering the following alternatives: (I’m taking the liberty to express my thoughts along the way.)

  • GIVE THE GIFT OF TIME by creating your own gift card for a service (e.g., babysitting, carwashing, petsitting, chores, making dinner, organizing an outing). Hey Mom… you could give us gift certificates of time to visit different dog parks!
  • GIVE A HANDMADE GIFT like a memoir of cherished memories with that person, a book of family recipes, a collage of pictures and mementos, or a calendar filled with the birthdays and anniversaries of friends and family. Hey Mom… you could make us handmade treats!
  • OFFER TO TEACH A SKILL YOU POSSESS (e.g., knitting, photography, computer skills, financial planning, a foreign language, music lessons, canning tomatoes, cooking a favorite recipe). Hey Mom… you could teach us to swim in the bay!
  • CONSIDER LESS GIMMICKY, LESS COMMERCIAL GIFTS for children, such as arts/crafts supplies, books, a magnifying glass, or building blocks. Hey Mom… building block toys would work for us, or… we could make ripped paper art together!
  • CREATE A PAPERLESS HOLIDAY LETTER on the computer and email it to friends and family. Hey Mom… you could tell us holiday stories about  Mugs *OTRB*, Koko *OTRB* and Fluffy *OTRB*!
  • HAVE A WHITE ELEPHANT PARTY at the office instead of a traditional gift exchange, where each person brings a wrapped secondhand item in good condition. Hey Mom… we’ll bring you used shoes (more on this Monday) and you can bring us second hand toys!
  • DRAW NAMES IN YOUR FAMILY FOR GIFT-GIVING (for extra fun and surprise, make it “Secret Santas”), so that you can put more time and thought into one gift instead of having to give to several people.  Hey Mom… we could draw names and you can help us with the gifting process, right?
  • SHOP FOR USED ITEMS for all or most of your holiday gifts (e.g., local thrift store, Craigslist, Freecycle, used products on Amazon or eBay).  Hey Mom… I hear garage sales sell stuffies really cheap.  Who cares if they only last a few minutes?
  • SHARE THE GIFT OF MUSIC by caroling, and include visits to elderly neighbors or a nursing home. Or, gather friends and family for an in-home holiday sing-a-long.  Hey Mom… music helps distract us during boom/streaky lights season!
  • GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY by preparing care packages for the homeless, or volunteering at an organization to help those in need during the holiday season.  Hey Mom… we’ll visit humans and make them happy!  (here’s the link for that picture… too cute!)
  • ADOPT A “LESS IS MORE” ATTITUDE toward holiday decorating. Opt for natural trimmings such as clippings from local evergreens and holly bushes.  Hey Mom… I think we have this one down already!!!
  • SAVE PAPER by wrapping gifts in newspaper comics, junk mail, paper bags decorated with markers, old maps, phone books, or other reused paper. Hey Mom… we’re not picky with how our presents arrive!
  • PREPARE YOUR HOLIDAY MEALS with as many seasonal, locally grown, and/or organic foods as possible.  Hey Mom… you got this one!
  • REDUCE JUNK MAIL by removing your name from mailing lists of unwanted holiday catalogs.   Hey Mom… you get most of your pet catalogues online now, right?

Another great holiday plan day.
