Follow Up Friday – Cone of Courage Edition

Hey It’s Jet Here.

follow-up-fridayOur friend, Miss Jodi, Heart Like a Dog, initiated this great idea to update readers on previous posts.  She created a lovely badge to go with her idea and has successfully turned her wonderful idea into a robust blog hop!

Before I begin, may I write a BIG THANK YOU for checking on Mom and I to see how we’re feeling.  I’m kerplopping less out on our walks; however, I’m still rather uncomfortable.  Mom says I tolerate the first aid spray and the goopy medicine very well.  The Cone of Courage remains on 24/7 to defray (VBP) my desire to bite/scratch the area.  Mom seems to have improved about 20%; she continues to feel like her head is under water!  She kept her promise and rested a good bit last week.

Saturday – Merry Newfmas and Happy Houndlidays

ernieWe enjoyed participating in The Pet Blogger Gift Exchange hosted by the fetching Honey and Miss Pamela.  Many of you already knew our giftee, Newf and Hound, while several of you looked forward to meeting them.  Guess what?  Turns out my buddy, Snoopy, lives really close to Hazel, Ernie, Nooner and Foyle and wants to meet them!  Super cool!

Sunday – Cone of Courage

cone of courage 1We appreciated your feedback which ranged from acknowledging our efforts to “turn our frown, upside down” to making lemonade from lemons, etc… Mom asked me to share she’s glad you found the photo moving.  So many of you have my back on this one, I feel the love!

Monday – Scientific Mischief

human tangled in dog leashYeah, you could relate to Little Miss Bird Dog and my urges to uh… stray from the strict scientific endeavor of participating in this year’s annual Bird Count.  Glad you got a kick out of our Boa Leash maneuver!  Of course you understood our efforts to keep that arrogant Winchester in line!  My BFF, Savannah, requested a quill from that peacock, which, we will happily try to find when he next molts!

Tuesday – Tasty Tuesday Christmas Style

christmasWe wished our blogpal community celebrating Christmas the appropriate greetings and asked how to properly do so in a few cultures.  We learned that in a few countries, it’s proper to say Happy Christmas, as Merry Christmas might imply (VBP) debauchery!  We even learned how to send good wishes in Dutch from Suki, Hiro and Miss DiandaVrolijk Kerstfeest!

Wednesday – Now I’m a Leaping Lord

Wowee, wow wow!  Can you believe Miss Ann bestowed such a Royal title on ‘ol Jetty boy?  Thanks for the positive feedback on my new skills.  I think that I may be ready to learn the game of kings… POLO!  Several pals worried about my ego… I want to quash (VBP) the notion that I will change as a result of my recent Royal titles… I remain your humble Jetty.  If I begin to show any difference, Mom PROMISES to keep me in line!

Thursday – The Little Thingies

shameless conesSo glad you feel the same way about gratitude for the “basics” (which are really a big deal, especially for those of us who had “before” times we do not want to think about.)  We all agree to take time each day to remind ourselves of how fortunate we are.  I’ll remind you, if you remind me!

As for my digression regarding the recent appointment of a new Secretary of State, our friends at the DogDaz Zoo wrote, “And you are so right about a Golden for Sec of State.”  I really feel Bo’s Dad made a mistake – there, I said it again!

Another great Follow Up Friday holiday edition.

Blog-versary –Where Did the Year Go?

Hey It’s Jet Here.

So, along with my Gotcha Day last Sunday, (yet to receive a proper celebration… however, as the patient, Southern, Gentleman Jetty that I am… I know Mom has something cooking!) we quietly celebrated our first blog-versary on Halloween.  We didn’t make a fuss as the holiday provided lively entertainment in blog world.

When Mom agreed to collaborate with me as a way to lift our spirits after my sweet golden sister, Koko, passed in September 2011, we never in a million years expected the following:

  • With the exception of 12 days, we kept our commitment to post each day.
  • To learn what a blog hop meant and to participate in so many wonderful hops.  The hops keep us organized, structured, and in a routine as well as eliminating writer’s block most of the time!
  • As we’ve posted frequently, we’ve made so many acquaintances and a few friends beyond the blog, helping us feel connected, when we’ve been a bit isolated over the last few years.  To learn about and from our American blogpals in addition to Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England, Canada, Spain, France, The Netherlands, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Switzerland enhance our lives.
  • We have shared joy, laughter, loss, support, concern and caring … the gamut (VBP – Vocab builder project) of emotions, really.
  • The quality of the writing, creativity, social consciousness, generosity and commitment amongst our blogpals surpassed and truthfully surprised us and many in our world unfamiliar with blogs and blogging.
  • We appreciate the kindness and feedback about our other “jobs” as the Kitchen Counselor and Mom’s Kitchen K9s.
  • We have experienced the understanding, flexibility and empathy of how we all fall behind on commenting and visiting all the marvelous petblogs out there.
  • We appreciate and hope to continue learning and listening to wise bloggers out there, like Miss Linda (saved JJ’s life), Dr. Rayya (helps break down life as a vet) and Emma (shared a pawesome ear cleaning formula!) who offer advice, education, guidance and warnings to keep those of us fur family members safe.

Thanks to all of you, who take the time from your busy lives to read our musings, comment, check in on us and engage in ongoing adventures.  You have welcomed us into this precious community of pet bloggers and we feel privileged to participate.

To another great year together!

Jetty and Mom (JJ and Puffy, too!)  In loving memory… Mugs, Koko and Fluffy

Supporting Shelter Month – Tropical Style

Hey It’s Jet Here.

We wanted to do our part to support Shelter month by sharing two events in our area.  Next Friday night, PetSmart Charities presents: Midnight to Midnight Mega Pet Adoption Event.   How cool is that!  A puppy/kitten kickoff at Midnight on Friday should start the event off adorably!  Kids’ activities and food trucks will round out the format.  The ASPCA,  Humane Society of Greater Miami, Miami-Dade County Animal Services (This is where Golden Rescue South Florida Found me and JJ!) , and the Cat Network will participate.  (We adopted Puffy and Fluffy from Cat Network, many moons ago, btw!)

I’m slightly offended that no one called ‘ol Jetty boy to pose for the poster!

Now, if that’s not enough, Miss Mary Ann forwarded the following photo to Mom in a text.

Fireman and Rescues Rocking the Runway?  Ladies, ladies, stand back!  Again, fairly flummoxed (VBP – vocab building project) that I, Jetty the Gentleman, did not hear the phone ring asking me to model for the poster. I can show my abs:

Friends Forever, the group hosting the event, is the group my sweet golden sister, Koko, came from.

Whether you live in the tropics or elsewhere, please support shelter month.  Koko, Fluffy (OTRB), Puffy, JJ and I all found our forever families through shelter adoption.  We deeply appreciate all of the humans who help K9s and felines like us find their own forever families.  We acknowledge your dedication, love and support and share it back tenfold!

Another great shelter events day in the tropics.

Mischief Monday – BTC4 Animals – Who Doesn’t Like Black?

Hey It’s Jet Here.

Today, the wonderful folks at Blog the Change 4 Animals, coordinated an event to assist Dog Rescue.  As you know, Koko, may she be frolicking over the Rainbow Bridge, JJ and I all benefited from Golden Rescue South Florida and… MOM!  Before we knew many of you, we posted on Black Friday about one aspect of Dog Rescue.  We’re reposting for those who missed it the first go round.

Additionally, it’s Mischief Monday!  To make it short and sweet naughty, the humans who discriminate against black K9s below are the MISCHIEF MAKERS!

So, Mom told me that today is this thing called Black Friday.  How nice of the world to commemorate the fetching color of my fur!  Not all black dogs have luck like me.  Have you ever heard of Black Dog Syndrome?   “Well known to shelter workers and rescue organizations across the nation, black dogs are much more difficult to find homes for. They are the last dogs to find homes and often among the first to be euthanized.”

The following thoughts contribute to BDS:

  • Some people have the crazy idea that us black pearls bring bad luck like that whole silly black cat thing.
  • We may not photograph as well as other fur colors making us less eye catching on websites. Second Chance Photos can teach you how to make us look our best.
  • Now I like movies like the next K9 (Marley and Me? Inspired!), however, that Hollywood place often selects black dogs for scary movies.
  • Our most beautiful selves do not shine in shelter cages.

I’m super lucky, Golden Retriever Rescue South Florida loved my face (what can I say?) and broke me out of the shelter with four days to spare.  They help flat coat retrievers now-a-days, too.  (thank you, thank you, thank you.)

So, when you shop ‘til you drop today and if you’re thinking of adding a furry member to your family this holiday season, remember – Black is beautiful.

Another great black pearl day.

Can’t Believe We Forgot to Post This Earlier

Hey It’s Jet Here.

Mom and I share the blame for the late notification.  She put this item in our folder so we would not forget and guess what?  Yup…  Even when the formal events end… you can keep the theme going!

Anyway, as you may recall, handome/gorgeous black dogs/cats have a 40% less chance of adoptions.  We thought Back in Black was a really cool initiative, especially with the upcoming release of the Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones sequel, Men in Black 3.

Don’t you just LOVE the LOGO!

Hey Mom?  Where are my shades and tie?

Another great Back in Black day.

Mom Did Apologize

Hey It’s Jet Here.

Mom advised me that during the next few days, her transcription time allotment for ol’ Jetty boy will shrink.  The reasons, well, I must say, they’re admirable.  As The Kitchen Counselor, Mom will teach a class to 30 people in the Cancer community tomorrow morning/afternoon.  Oh, our kitchen is aflutter in preparation.  Salmon, turkey, veggies, fruits, roasting nuts, and Japonica rice are a few of the items sending off aromas that can make a Kitchen K9 do the circular happy dance!

On Sunday, Mom will demonstrate Farmers Market goodies.  She’s not sharing those ideas yet, however I did overhear the mention of yummy cauliflower! On Tuesday, Mom will work with a diabetic support group as a member of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Family Health department team.  I heard rumblings of a Cinco de Mayo theme… muy bien!  (Oh, I never mentioned I’m a somewhat bilingual perro? (Spanish for dog!))

When I first met Mom, I did not respond to verbal commands well.  Mom then tried hand signals… better… then commands in Spanish and voila!  She laughed heartily I tell you!  She mostly speaks to me in English, however, my Auntie Angela, my Madrina (godmother in Spanish),  and Auntie Liz speak to me in Spanish sometimes.  And… as I’ve mentioned, my manly man friend, Giovanni, Neve’s dad, speaks to us in Italian!

Another great cultural day.

Wordless Wednesday: Million Dollar Mug

Hey It’s Jet Here.

Look at this face:

This is Red Tibetan Mastiff, Big Splash – price tag: 1.5 million dollars… Big Splash INDEED! (A Chinese coal baron purchased him.)

Uh Mom?  In relation to Big Splash, at $300 for my GRSF adoption, I was the bargain of the century!

Jetty, my word for you – priceless!

Another great priceless day.

Blog the Change – GRSF

Hey It’s Jet Here.

We’re participating in Blog the Change Day today.

Blog the Change

Today, we’re saluting breed rescues.   Often, when a movie highlights a particular breed, like the Airbud series, a dumping of that breed occurs when humans realize that puppies = lots of work, the breed does not suit the human’s situation, or the K9 does not act like the K9 in the movie.

Mom waited almost 30 years to share her life with a Golden Retriever, like my Great Aunt Harriet’s K9, Brandy.  When Mom learned about breed rescue in the summer of 2004, she could not believe that four Golden Retriever rescues existed in the South Florida area.

Mom and I have shared our gratitude for Golden Rescue South Florida many times.   We support GRSF because they:

  • Kept my sister, Koko, (may she be frolicking over the Rainbow Bridge), out of the pound when her human went to jail in 2005,
  • Saved my life with 4 days to spare from Animal Services in 2008, even though I was not a golden. (Thank heavens Miss Carole thought my face was handsome!)
  • Plucked JJ out of Animal Services when she got dumped in 2011.

Three women, Miss Carol in Miami Dade County, Miss Lee Ann in Broward County and Miss Lisa in Palm Beach County have dedicated and committed themselves 1000% to help save and find forever homes for Goldens, mostly Goldens and a few honorary Goldens!  We appreciate them with all our hearts and paws.

Remember, if you feel deeply connected to a particular breed, no worries, you can STILL rescue!  Google your breed of choice with the word rescue plus your state and see what happens.

Another great Blog the Change Day.

Three Minutes of Your Time?

Hey It’s Jet Here.

Ok, well I might need a few more than three minutes…

Thanks to Confessions of the PlumeLife With Dogs and Two Cavaliers for hosting the Saturday Pet Blog Hop.

Item 1:

Did you know April 4th was World Stray Day?  We didn’t either.  Mr. Caesar brought this to our attention in his newsletter article.

Since Golden Rescue South Florida saved my life at the “you know where” almost four years ago, and those folks didn’t know my whole “before” time story, Mom does not know whether I was one of the Strays that Mr. Caesar speaks of.  All I know is that my fellow K9s and Puffy/Fluffy’s fellow felines would surely appreciate any support.

Item 2:

Wowee! Miss Rachael (Ray) has a 100K Challenge going in conjunction (vocabulary builder) with the ASPCA.    Think of the biscuits, the toys, the spa days, the blankies, the kibble, and other good stuff that biscuit money could provide for so many animals in need.  Go ahead and VOTE!

Item 3:

Our pal, Miss Mel, from No Dog About It Blog alerted us to yet another really scary pet treat warning.    We signed the petition and everything! Please make sure K9s like me have safe yummies to eat.

Another great, kind of serious, day.

Happy Gotcha Day Mom!

Hey It’s Jet Here.

According to my Nana, today is Mom’s Gotcha Day.  I wanted to make sure she didn’t miss one extra minute.  JJ and I let her give us belly rubs and brushing from midnight to about 12:30 a.m. and then I woke her up at 4:38 a.m.  We snuggled until about 5:17 and then off we went to begin the day.

Mom’s day started to resemble this guy named Murphy, as in Murphy’s Law.  She told my Auntie Liz via the phone that she thought she should crawl back into bed and start over!  Lots of kind people including Nana, my human sister, Rachel, Grandpa etc… have wished her Happy Birthday.  What’s a birthday?

Jetty, that’s the day you were born, which sometimes differs from a Gotcha day.  If you do not have that information, the day you joined your forever family becomes your Gotcha Day.  For example, Koko’s Gotcha Day was 2/7/05, however, her birthday was sometime in 2002-2003.  JJ’s Gotcha Day is 12/14/11 and yours is 10/28/08.

On behalf of me, JJ, Puffy and Fluffy, HAPPY GOTCHA/BIRTHDAY MOM!  More snuggles tonight to celebrate, after you feed us, walk us, give us snacks, walk us again, play with us etc…

Thanks so much Jetty, you four bring great joy, love and laughter into my life.

Another great Gotcha/birthday.
