Mischief Monday – BTC4 Animals – Who Doesn’t Like Black?

Hey It’s Jet Here.

Today, the wonderful folks at Blog the Change 4 Animals, coordinated an event to assist Dog Rescue.  As you know, Koko, may she be frolicking over the Rainbow Bridge, JJ and I all benefited from Golden Rescue South Florida and… MOM!  Before we knew many of you, we posted on Black Friday about one aspect of Dog Rescue.  We’re reposting for those who missed it the first go round.

Additionally, it’s Mischief Monday!  To make it short and sweet naughty, the humans who discriminate against black K9s below are the MISCHIEF MAKERS!

So, Mom told me that today is this thing called Black Friday.  How nice of the world to commemorate the fetching color of my fur!  Not all black dogs have luck like me.  Have you ever heard of Black Dog Syndrome?   “Well known to shelter workers and rescue organizations across the nation, black dogs are much more difficult to find homes for. They are the last dogs to find homes and often among the first to be euthanized.”

The following thoughts contribute to BDS:

  • Some people have the crazy idea that us black pearls bring bad luck like that whole silly black cat thing.
  • We may not photograph as well as other fur colors making us less eye catching on websites. Second Chance Photos can teach you how to make us look our best.
  • Now I like movies like the next K9 (Marley and Me? Inspired!), however, that Hollywood place often selects black dogs for scary movies.
  • Our most beautiful selves do not shine in shelter cages.

I’m super lucky, Golden Retriever Rescue South Florida loved my face (what can I say?) and broke me out of the shelter with four days to spare.  They help flat coat retrievers now-a-days, too.  (thank you, thank you, thank you.)

So, when you shop ‘til you drop today and if you’re thinking of adding a furry member to your family this holiday season, remember – Black is beautiful.

Another great black pearl day.

  1. This is a wonderful post and one that reminds us very much of our older brother who went to the bridge. He was a lab/newfy mix who was all black with a white patch on his chest. He was a big guy at about a hundred pounds. But, he was one hundred pounds of pure love. We miss him very much. Our mama adopted him from a shelter too!! xoxo Chloe and LadyBug

    • Hey Chloe, Hey Lady Bug, Jet here.

Thank you so much for your kind compliment.

Lab/newfy? Wow, if Mom ever visited, she would have never stopped petting your special brother. Thanks to your forever family for saving a black pearl like me. We’re not scary, we’re marshmallows!

Sending Jetty kisses right back. 🙂

    • Hey Dalton, Jet here.

To all the flat coats and border collies with black fur (I’m a combo, we think!) I join your massive bark of support for our gorgeous black furiends.
Here’s my best one. Whoa, pause… whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa… 🙂

  2. Hi Jet!

Thanks for sharing. Linus and Stetson are both black pups and we rescued Linus from the shelter based on a (not so good) picture of him on a website. Luckily the poor quality picture didn’t stop me from driving down to the shelter.

    Take care,
    Colby

    • Hey Linus, Hey Stetson, Hey Apache, Jet here. Hi Mr. Colby.

Yippee! Linus and I are super lucky to have the forever homes we do! Thanks for helping a black pearl like me! 🙂

  3. The black cats and dogs who’ve shared my life always seem smarter than the average critter — our black rabbit was full of personality and use to invite our little Schnauzer into her pen where they would curl up together.

  4. Hi Jet! We used your picture of Champ on our post today for Blog the Change. Hope you don’t mind! By the way, we love black doggies! They are just as special as all the other doggies, don’t you think!!!!!

    • Hey Dogs N Pawz, Jet here.

REALLY? REALLY? Yippee yahoo… we’ll go there in a minutes…

Yes, the concept seems so logical and obvious, we don’t get why humans fuss over color…

  5. Hi sweet Jetty – Great post – three cheers for black pearls – I think all canines (and all animals) are special and wonderful no matter what their fur color!

Hoping you and JJ had a peaceful storm free night – we did until 5:00a.m. when a few thunder booms woke Cassie so I just stayed downstairs with her.

love you Jetty and JJ xoxoxox

    • Hey it’s Jet here. Hi Miss Wendy.

      EXACTLY, seems so obvious, right?

We had 4:00 booms and we had an hour or so in the closet because Mom needed some rest!

      Love u right back. xoxoxoxox

  6. I never heard of Black Dog Syndrome! What silly things people think up!! My second dog was a totally black lab mix, and she took great photos and was a very sweet dog. And I LOVE black pearls too! To me, black pearls and black opals have more character than the more common types because their colors are more dramatic. Hmph. So there. 😉

  7. Great post and topic, our blog was actually inspired by Petey who was a double-whammy rescue – an older black dog! Thanks for helping us promote the event 😉

    • Hey Petey, Jet here. Hi Miss Denise.

Thanks for your kinds words. I might have been older, we don’t know exactly! Please give Petey a manly man chest bump for me!

We love participating in important events such as this one! Whoo hoo! 🙂

  8. Sadly black dogs don’t photograph well and don’t look as good to people searching for a dog. That should not count against them.

  9. this was super good my friends!! We don’t know why so many people have an aversion to adopting black dogs and black cats. We think they are stunningly beautiful!! Hence the term “black beauty!!”

    • Hey it’s Jet here. Hi Miss Martha.

Thanks for supporting our efforts today! Mom does too! Hence Koko (frolicking over the Rainbow bridge and JJ!)

Would you mind looking at our Saturday post? We had our first poll this past saturday, voting for the best bachelor for JJ (all goldens!)

  10. Hi Y’all,

Thanks so much for stoppin’ by for a visit. I’m so glad y’all could make it!

My Humans used to have a Flat Coat retriever…guess they’re black like Chessies are brown. Then the next rescue was a Chessie girl and after she went to find the Rainbow there was me, though I’m the first dog they ever had that wasn’t a rescue.

My Human loves black…horses and dogs and of course the “little black dress”…;)

    Y’all come back now,
    Hawk aka BrownDog

    • Hey Hawk, Jet here.

They had a flat coat, like 1/2 of me? Wowee!!! And a Chessie girl rescue? Whoo hoo and then you! Your humans are fantastic! Black K9s, rescued K9s, perfect K9 (you!!)

Oh, Hawk the LBD, yup, lots of female humans talk about that A LOT! See, black (and all the other colors)are beautiful!

    • Hey brown dawgs, Jet here. Hi Miss Linda.

FOR SURE they count!!! My human sister adopted a black cat 2 years ago. She lives at the other house though.

We know that you love all colors of fur, hey… you could paint a stripe on the brown dawgs for solidarity one day! BOL!!!

  12. I have never, ever heard about people having a superstition against black DOGS. That’s just crazy and I don’t understand where that came from. I don’t remember witches ever having black dogs 🙂 I think people should treat dogs like people and not be prejudiced based on color.

    • Hey Chester, Hey Gretel, Jet here.

EXACTLY… Seems like this should be what Mom calls a NO BRAINER! If I may say, my gorgeous black fur is soft, fluffy and mostly good smelling! At least that’s what Mom says!!! 🙂

  13. Black Dog Syndrome is one of those things that I just don’t understand! and don’t like! A dog is a dog whatever color! Great post!

    • Hey Sherman, Hey Leroy, Jet here. Hi Miss Jen.

Mom and I are right with you, but, then again, Mom says she never understood the color divide among humans either.

      Thanks for your kind compliment!

  14. Great post! Our most recent black dog family member, Tucker, is patrolling beyond the rainbow bridge. When life settles down a bit, we’ll be adding another black pearl to our pack. Woofs from Jeffie and Rudy for a very important blog post!

    • Hey Jeffie, Hey Rudy, Jet here. Hi Miss Sue.

OMD, sorry, we didn’t realize Tucker was patrolling beyond the Rainbow Bridge. Perhaps Tucker can frolic with Koko, my Golden sister. 🙂

Thanks for your kind compliment on our post. Yeah black pearls… can’t wait to see who joins your furever family when appropriate. 🙂

  15. What a great post! It’s so sad that black dogs get overlooked. Next time I adopt, I plan to get another Lab, (unless some other cutie finds me first), and I can’t see why I’d choose one color over another. It should be the dog’s personality, and not their color, that counts!

    • Hey it’s Jet here. Hi Miss Donna.

Thank you kindly for the compliment. I cannot believe a biped would not appreciate gorgeous black fur! Illogical I say! A lab? As part flat coat I think a retriever is a super idea! (bias showing!)

Doesn’t that seem obvious… personality over appearance? go figure… silly humans…

    • Hey FaRaDaY, Hey Maxwell, Hey Allie, Jet here.

*gulp* is right… I can barely discuss those times… thank you, me too… A forever home is a gift from heaven! (Mom says we’re all her heavenly gifts, too!)

    • Hey it’s Jet here.

We couldn’t believe it either when we first learned of it… seems totally illogical! Well thank you, as a black pearl myself, I will accept the pawesome compliment! 🙂

  16. I’m so glad your people didn’t suffer from the stupidity (did I say that out loud?) required to perpetuate Black Dog Syndrome. If I live to be 100, this is one I’ll just never understand – it’s a color, not a personality trait! :shakesherheadmutteringtoherself:

Thanks for talking about this important subject. AND for being a great representative to help people get over their silly superstitions.

    • Hey Bella, Jet here. Hi Miss Leslie.

Thank you, beautifully and succintly (vocab builder) put. Personally, I do not understand why humans don’t get it. I do know it hurts my feelings.

Most welcome… blushing and proud at the same time. 🙂
