Tasty Tuesday – Fishing Cats?

Hey It’s Jet Here.

Thanks to Sugar and Kol for initiating Tasty Tuesdays, today is our seventh participating post!

You know Mom loves to research and reads a zillion items for her Kitchen Counselor newsletter, Servings.  JJ and I, her trusty Kitchen K-9 listen carefully when Mom shares interesting kitchen info, particularly when it has to do with 4 legged beings! Well, she came across this article and video  from ABC News about fishing cats.  Oh, it’s a sad story…

In this far away place called Thailand, a rare breed of cat with webbed feet and a pointed head, called Fishing Cats are in DANGER.  Why?  Well, in one word… SHRIMP.

According to biologist, Namfom Cutter, “Shrimp farmers dig big holes and raise hundreds of thousands of shrimp, which are then sorted, put on ice and shipped out.  The farms threaten fishing cats in two ways, Cutter said. The first is that the cats are losing their natural habitat to metastasizing shrimp farms, and are sometimes driven to kill chickens belonging to local villagers. Then those villagers turn around and kill the cats.”

What can humans do to help prevent the extinction of fishing cats?  DO NOT BUY SHRIMP FROM THAILAND.  In fact, did you know you can download a safe seafood pocket guide to carry with you when you shop?  Yup, Mom told me.   I know that’s a tall order, but gosh, a cat species going that thingie called extinct?  That’s super serious and like…FOREVER… and not forever in a good way like forever home.

“Cutter and the other fishing cat conservationists said they aren’t trying to shut down the shrimp farms, but just to get them to operate more sustainably and carefully. But what would really help, she said, would be a little pressure from us.

From all of us 4 legged beings, THANKS FOR HELPING.

Another great, sustainable shrimp please, day.

  1. hey jet!

That’s just awful. I’m not sure if I’d been paying much attention, but does this mean that the shrimp growth are natural or not?

I hope those cats change their diet to shrimps so they won’t have to be endangered… Oh well, that’s just wishful thinking.

    Huggies and Cheese,

    • Hey Haopee, Jet here.

The shrimp farms are created by the humans… wild shrimp may have been available in the mangrove area in small amounts, not as an enterprise…

      I think so, too, unfortunately…

    • Hey Savannah, Jet here.

Really, Yippee yahoo! Our grocery store, (Whole Foods) helps by having specific labels and their own system of letting you know what is line caught, wild, pole caught, farmed, sustainable, etc…

Most welcome for reminder and commenting! 🙂

  2. OH Big Bro Jet! Mom said she didn’t know about Fishing Cats and their link to Shrimps before this! It must be the high demand for Thailand Seafood Tom Yum Soup and all the seafood dishes which are really popular in Thailand too. Mom said she will go download the pocket guide now… (Wooooh There’s a Sushi Guide TOOO?) Thank you Big bro Jet for sharing this very important piece of information. 🙂 *Praying for the Fishing Cats (and Shrimps)*

    • Hey Poppy, Big Bro here.

Glad you got a nap in and sorry to learn Cassie had a tough time. Wow, you sound as busy as Mom!

      Yippee, pocket guide download… SUCCESS!

Yes, we had what Miss Mary Ann called sheetfuls of rain last night. When the band passed, I was too uh, ahem, uh… scared to go out. Well, smart me because when Mom, Miss “No big deal, I’ll go out and do my business quickly” met Miss Mary Ann and Dixie, by the end of the rectangle block circuit, they heard booms coming!

Sending cruise ships full of Jetty kisses and JJ hugs to you, Mr. David, Jacob, Cassie, Rex and Barkley. xoxoxoxo

PS… NAUGHTY garage company… door still you know whating, electrical brain has left the building… heard rumors that the company may visit tomorrow. 😦

  4. Thanks for spreading the word Jetty, I’ll be sure never to buy shrimp from Thailand!! Humans it seems are the downfall of most species, it is not something to be proud of.

    • Hey Sampson, Hey Delilah, Jet here. Hi Miss Jodi.

Our pleasure Miss Jodi… I try not to be judgmental about you humans since so many of you kindly save lives like mine… however, I do notice from Mom’s reading, that humans often have their thumbs in the muck!
