My First Blogspondent Assignment – Part I

Hey, It’s Jet Here.

Mom receives weekly updates from a wonderful place called Best Friends Animal Society.  Their mission:  No More Homeless Pets.  Mom volunteered there for 3 days with my human sister, Rachel, about five years ago.  Their experiences changed both of them.  They still brag about having three doggie sleepovers!  Guess what?  Now the Best Friends folks permit cat, rabbit and PIGGIE sleepovers, too!

On Monday, Miami Dade County will vote on a law which could cause neighbors to turn in neighbors who own pit bulls.  Click here to see the legislative activities occurring in your state.

Mom emailed Best Friends because she wanted to post the petition link on her facebook page without her personal information.  Ledy Vankavage, Senior Legislative Attorney, wrote back trying to help.  Mom, ever the go-getter, asked Ledy if we could interview her regarding breedism, a “hot topic.”  She graciously agreed.  When I dictate MOM, please know I mean Mom asked the questions that she and I previously agreed upon.

MOM:  How did you get into this field?

LV:  After law school, I learned that where I lived, Madison County, killed animals for research.  (In the ‘80s…)  Upon learning this fact, I recruited five people to work on changing the policy, which we successfully did in 60 days.

I then learned that the shelter took in 4,000 animals/year and adopted out 78 with the remaining animals euthanized or sold for research.  Working within the shelter, after forming an adoption agency, we adopted out 900 animals the first year!   Click here to find out more amazing positions Ledy created/held to help my fellow pets.

MOM:  In alignment with Best Friends Mission of No More Homeless Pets, what areas currently top your “to do” list?

LV:  Breed profiling/breed discrimination, community cats and puppy mills.

Tomorrow: Part II – More specifics on breed discrimination legislation and adoption stats.

Another great journalistic day.

    • Hey Rumpy, Jet here. Thanks for your support of my new endeavor… stay tuned for tomorrow, Mom and I really get into the “meat” of the subject! Oh, btw, JJ and I just had 2 halves of 2 different eggs from our friend Ish’s farm… YUMMMMMMMMMM

  1. Best Friends is one of our very favorite places. Wish we had the green papers to send them some money. But there are so many of us here, it takes all we have for all of us to eat. We enjoyed this post and are looking forward to the next one. We are great fans of the feral cats and that is why we have so many.

    • Hey, it’s Jet here. Hi Marg. Yippee, you know about Best Friends! At this time, we wish we had green papers to send to them, too. Mom says we try to support them in other ways. Here’s an inside scoop. Mom has read their magazine/visited/kept up with BF for over 15 years. She remembers when they built the new octagonal buildings in DogTown. Before visiting, she wondered if they really walked the talk, wondering how it was possible to keep everything clean and all the creatures cared for.

Well, when she and Rachel visited, they volunteered in the bunny/guinea pig area, the farm animal area, dogtown, and the cat area. (They left out the bird area, Rachel was too young.) Marg, it was spotless, cleaned each day from top to bottom and then some. The animals received such loving care, Mom and Rachel were amazed.

Thanks for helping the feral cats, and a special thanks from my feline brothers (adopted from Cat Network in 2003), Puffy and Fluffy.

  2. Hi Jetty – is there nothing you and your Mom can;t do?? you two are amazing – this was such a interesting article – great job! can;t wait to read part 2 tomorrow. The farm fresh eggs sound yummy!!

    • Hey, it’s Jet here. Hi Miss Wendy. Gosh Miss Wendy, we’re blushing… well, I’m not exactly blushing, I’m acting all sheepish… Yes, more to follow tomorrow.

Oh Miss Wendy, if you only knew how yummy those eggs are… JJ and I inhale them. We have about 6 dz left if you need any!!!

Mom has a demo at the Coral Gables Farmers Market tomorrow… she prepped for about 2 1/2 hours and all we got was a 1/2 a strawberry each. hmpf. Jet, that’s because you two cannot have citrus and that’s what I was working with. Ok, Mom… I guess I understand….

Sending you Jetty kisses and JJ hugs… oh to Mr. David, Jacob, Cassie, Rex, and Barkley too!
